In one settlement, Amazon agreed not to sell the foie gras in California and paid $100,000 in civil penalties. In 2018, prosecutors in three California counties accused Amazon of violating a 2004 state law that banned the sale of foie gras. This type of regulatory pressure is not without precedent. If a judge finds Amazon in violation of the law, the state of California could fine Amazon for every sale containing ejiao. “Donkeys are equine and the sale of ejiao for human consumption in California is illegal”: the law is clear for Per Frank Rothschild, director of the Center for Contemporary Equine Studies. The Center argues that, according to the statute, horsemeat means any part of any equine, including donkeys. The 1998 ballot, known at the time of its page as Proposition Six, it criminalizes the sale of horse meat for human consumption on the grounds that horses, like cats and dogs, are not food animals and deserve similar protections. The Center argues that Amazon’s distribution and sale of ejiao violates a little-known California animal welfare law called the Prohibition of Horse Slaughter and Sale of Horsemeat for Human Consumption Act. A lawsuit filed in California last week by the law firm Evans & Page on behalf of the Center for Contemporary Equine Studies, a non-profit organization, alleges Amazon’s continued sale of these donkey products “could be illegal”. Some retailers such as Walmart and eBay have pledged to phase out products that contain ejiao, while they are widely sold on Amazon despite numerous petitions calling for them to stop selling them. According to a report by the Donkey Sanctuary, between 20 the annual production of ejiao rose from 3,200 to 5,600 tons, an increase of more than 20 percent per year.Ī source of profit that leads animals to experience the serious consequences: Wired: shows a video where workers in Tanzania beat donkeys with hammers to meet their slaughter quotas. A quick search on a search engine was enough to discover the terrible truth, especially for her who is a vegetarian.Īs LaZampa already recounted in this article, every year millions of donkeys are slaughtered and skinned to produce ejiao, a gelatin with (alleged) properties to contrast heart disease and even abortions which is used by Traditional Chinese Medicine. But on the back he noticed an ingredient that he had never seen before: “gelatina nigra”. In fact, on the bottle it was written that they were composed of “100% pure natural herbs”. The Artemisia Anti-Hemorrhage Formula food supplements that the Californian woman had purchased on Amazon ended up in the crosshairs, having no reason to suspect that she was eating donkey. The case is raised by the US magazine Wired: starting from the report of a vegetarian woman who bought supplements also containing gelatine nigra, a product deriving from donkey meat. The presence of products containing donkey meat becomes impeachable Amazon.
